I'd like to share a funny story about the time I almost got arrested—with my grandmother!
Oma loved the Fall—the weather, the smell of the air, and especially the changing leaves. In Fall 2002 she and I took a road trip from NJ through New England. The trip was wonderful and one afternoon in particular still makes me smile and laugh. On this afternoon Oma and I decided to make more random stops than usual to get out and stretch our legs and enjoy the beautiful weather. At one stop we found a turn off near a large reservoir that was surrounded by amazing foliage and beautiful rocks. Oma loved unusual rocks and we both agreed that we should take a few for our respective rock gardens. We walked down to the water in search of the very best specimens (we were being choosy) and were climbing back up when we saw a police car. We figured that the officer was just checking that we didn’t need assistance so we walked right up to him—arms full of rocks and greeting him with big smiles. The officer was not amused or checking to see if we needed help. He was serious and irritated, and let us know that we were trespassing and stealing and that he could fine or arrest us! Well, Oma put on her best grandmotherly smile and look of innocence and talked our way out of it. She laughed so hard about that the rest of the trip and for years to come! We did manage to each sneak one rock into the trunk of her car!
